ALARM Survey puts spotlight on efficiencies

As with many areas of life in this current climate, the theme of the need for efficiencies comes through strongly in the recent AIA ALARM Survey.

Far too much money is being used reacting to defects, mending poor quality work or paying insurance claims.  The condition of the road network affects each and everyone of us in some shape or form.  The recent increase in potholes and general deterioration of many of our roads is not just due to the harsh winter we have just been through, but as the survey points out, it is also due to the underfunding over many years for road maintenance.

David Hutchinson, HTMA Executive Director, commented: “There is a growing appreciation of the value of our road network and this has been recognised, in part, with the £100M emergency fund from the Chancellor.  But the real recognition, however, will come when the funding is provided for long-term maintenance programmes. This will ensure that this valuable asset is managed and maintained in good condition and ensure that funding is not wasted on short-term repairs and insurance claims.  Given the likely reductions in budgets, it is crucial that clients and their service providers work collaboratively to ensure that we get the maximum value from the available funding.

“Through its membership and its working groups, the HTMA is working hard at bringing together key stakeholders to help the industry increase efficiencies and get best value from the budgets that are available.  It is not going to be easy, but with the combined expertise available from both the public and private sectors, I believe that the impossible may just be achievable”
